Why don’t homebrewers like Budmilloors?

What beer style do you drink the most? Do you have a favorite brewery or microbrewery? Which beer style do you brew the most? More than likely you don’t have to think very long to answer these questions.
Believe it or not, even the mass produced beers, commonly referred to as Budmilloors, BMC, or fizzy yellow swill, by homebrewers, has a style category, 1A American Lager. If you are a beer lover, as I am, you probably drink several different beers. To find out more about the beer styles, click here
Ok, so what is the point of this post? Beer, what else? Ok, just kidding, the point of this post is to confront non-homebrewers, new home brewers, and the seasoned brewing vets with what is normally a taboo subject in the home brewing world, Budmilloors, Style 1A, American Lager.
Did you know that my least favorite President, Jimmy Carter, is at least partially responsible for home brewers right to brew? I am sure that you remember, or have heard of his brother, Billy Carter, NOT a home brewer (Billy Beer) but an all around beer sot, a bit like me, but he has a now infamous quote that goes something like this, “There is no such thing as a bad beer, It’s that some taste better than others”. It may sound silly, or even stupid, but if you think about it, there is a lot of wisdom in those words.
Many, and probably most, homebrewers will drink water before they drink Budmilloors, at least they won’t admit to it, but why? This is the question that I have never found an answer to, so, I am asking anyone reading this to post a comment and answer the question, tell me your favorites, and which you hate as well, I really need help on this.
I have brewed this style myself, I did three 10 gallon batches, using different combinations of the same ingredients, and yes they were all good, but did they taste anything like the stuff the “Big guys” produce? Not even close, thank God. So what is the trick? Quantity brewed, the brewing equipment and ingredients of course. So, what is the point? The “Big Guys” are good at what they do, so why not give them credit?
I even read a post on a homebrewing forum somewhere, that a guy bottled up some Bud and enterred it in a competition, he won!
Back to Billy’s quote, if there is no such thing as a bad beer, why do some taste really bad? Why don’t they all taste the same? That is simple, we all have different tastes or preferences but is the anwer to my question so obvious? I don’t think so.
Maybe I am just a drunk that brews beer? I don’t think so, I only drink on Friday night, mostly anyway, ok, I am a drunk! Maybe that is why I will drink Busch, with some friends, Arrogant Bastard with others, and who knows what at other times. I just like beer, no, not all brands, but many different ones. But, I am not a Beer Snob, I will drink Budmilloors!
What about you? Post a comment, tell us all what you think the answer is.
